Grant Overview
Increasing Access to Scholarships for Marginalized Students
Recent Policy and Market Shifts In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the need to address educational disparities and increase access to higher education for marginalized students in Illinois. This funding initiative aligns with state-level policies aimed at expanding scholarship opportunities and supporting the success of underrepresented populations in college.
Prioritized Funding Areas The funding priorities for this scholarship program include: 1) Providing tuition assistance for low-income students, particularly those from racial/ethnic minority backgrounds, 2) Offering mentorship and professional development opportunities to enhance the academic and career success of scholarship recipients, and 3) Establishing partnerships with local businesses to create internship and employment pathways for marginalized students.
Emerging Capacity Requirements Grant recipients are expected to demonstrate the capacity to effectively recruit, screen, and select qualified scholarship applicants, as well as provide comprehensive support services throughout the students' academic journeys. This may include developing robust outreach strategies, implementing holistic review processes, and maintaining dedicated staff to oversee mentorship and career development initiatives.
Fit Assessment Criteria When evaluating grant applications, the funding organization will prioritize proposals that: 1) Clearly articulate the barriers faced by marginalized students in accessing higher education, 2) Outline a comprehensive plan to identify, select, and support scholarship recipients, and 3) Establish meaningful partnerships with local employers to create employment opportunities for program participants.
Intent Guard Unlike general scholarship programs, this initiative is not intended to provide direct financial aid to individual students. Instead, the focus is on building the capacity of nonprofit organizations and educational institutions to develop and administer scholarship programs that specifically target and support marginalized students in Illinois.
